Where does your contribution go?
Friends support The Concertgebouw and the Concertgebouworkest, both financially and through specific projects and initiatives that introduce new audiences to classical music. Together with our youth association Entrée, we make concerts more accessible with discounts and priority booking, often with something extra such as a concert introduction or a conversation with a musician. Our own events increasingly connect classical music with other musical worlds, such as Music Bowl, Currents and Aural Spaces.
Close-up
Friends also make Close-up possible. In this chamber music series, musicians of the Concertgebouworkest perform programmes they have put together themselves in the Recital Hall: one-off concerts you will not hear anywhere else. Curious about what we organise? See our Friends activities.
Preludium
For almost 80 years, Concertvrienden has proudly published Preludium, the monthly magazine for classical music lovers.
About The Concertgebouw
It was Bernard Haitink who once praised The Concertgebouw as the best instrument of the orchestra that it houses. That must have been what prominent Amsterdam residents had in mind when they decided in 1881 to give the city a majestic concert hall. Seven years later, the swampy fields just outside the city limits boasted a wonder of neoclassical architecture. Today, just like the celebrated Concertgebouworkest, the hall enjoys worldwide renown.
About the Concertgebouworkest
The Concertgebouworkest was founded in 1888 and received the title ‘Royal’ on its 100th anniversary in 1988. Based in Amsterdam, it is one of the very best orchestras in the world. Critics have lauded its unique sound time and again: the strings have been called ‘velvety’, the brass ‘golden’, the woodwinds ‘distinctly personal’, and the percussion has an international reputation.
